Camping & Hiking - September 24, 2006 – Castle Butte

Castle Butte is located in the Big Muddy Valley 12 miles north of Big Beaver (just north of the Montana boundary). It's height is about 200 feet and has a circumference of 1/4 mile. A relic of the Ice Age, it was used as a landmark by the Indians, N.W.M.P. patrols, Outlaws and Settlers. This plateau provides pleasant views of the surrounding Big Muddy Badlands.

On September 24, sixteen adventurous women spent roughly three hours exploring this amazing Saskatchewan landmark!

Up we go!

Everyone climbed to the top right away!

Wow! 200 feet is a lot higher than you would think!

Hope you don't have a fear of heights!

Heading back down to ground level.
Tara takes a closer look at one of the many water-formed caves.
Walking around the base of Castle Butte, we saw ...
... interesting striations ...
... rock so compressed by glaciers it looked like glass ...
... wicked outcroppings ...
... and several water-formed caves ...
... that were more than big enough to crawl into!
Tara the cave-girl!
Luckily Monique (l) and Janice (middle) had flashlights and headlamps so we could see just how deep some of these caves were!
Hey! There's another one up here! (L to r: Michele, Krista, Sarah and Shaeya)
No stopping adventurous women, even when the cave is very narrow!
One last look ...
Heading home ...
